Favorite Course(s): I really enjoyed Dan Matheson’s Liability in Sport and Recreation course. I wasn’t necessarily interested in sports law but I learned a ton about some of the rules and regulations surrounding the NCAA that prepped me for my current position very well. I also participating in the Fans First and the Chicago Blackhawks practicum which played a huge role in my development towards working in sports. 

Field Experience: I utilized my student manager role with Iowa Baseball to earn Independent Field Experience my senior year. The experience working for the team gave me a leg up when it came time to find a job in sports post graduation. I also credit a lot of my professional development from attending the Chicago Blackhawks practicum twice: once as a student and once as a peer evaluator with Dan Matheson. 

Supplemental Experiential Learning: I attended as many field trips as I could around my busy baseball schedule - I believe I went to Des Moines, Milwaukee, Indianapolis and Kansas City during my time with the program. There is no better crash course to networking than actually going out and meeting sports business professionals through trips like this - and it was a really cool experience to meet Iowa graduates working in fields I one day hoped to be in.

Career Journey: During my last semester at Iowa I attended the MLB Winter Meetings to try and secure a job in professional baseball. Through my work with Iowa Baseball paired with the experiences I had through SRM I felt incredibly prepared to successfully tap into my network for this event. I had several interviews and left with a job offer to join the Baltimore Orioles organization. I spent one summer working there and ended up having an old coach from Iowa Baseball reach out about an opening at Penn State. I put in my application there and the rest is history.
