The sport and recreation management (SRM) program, in its ongoing efforts to increase diversity in the undergraduate and graduate programs, invites individuals from marginalized or underrepresented groups to apply for one of several available Diversity Scholarships. Total funding of $8,000, which will be broken up over several individual scholarship awards, is available. Awards will be made based on identification with a marginalized or underrepresented group plus a combination of demonstrated financial need and academic and extracurricular achievement. Scholarships will be credited directly to UBill charges to cover education-related expenses.

Applicants are eligible for one SRM Program Diversity Scholarship, but receipt of an SRM Program Diversity Scholarship does not disqualify anyone from applying for other types of SRM scholarships. Recipients may re-apply in future years for SRM Program Diversity Scholarships.

Criteria

All applications will be reviewed by a committee of SRM faculty and staff, and decisions will be made based on a combination of the following criteria:

• Must identify as a member of a marginalized or underrepresented group. This is defined broadly to include a wide range of marginalized and underrepresented groups–please review the application directly for details about scholarship eligibility.
• Declared major or master’s program must be Sport and Recreation Management (can be a double-major, but one major must be SRM). Students in the SRM undergraduate (BS) and graduate (MA) programs are eligible.
• Must be in good academic standing, not on academic probation, and a registered full-time student. (Less than full-time enrollment will be accepted if in the final semester before graduation or if a graduate student.)
• Financial need based on Office of Financial Aid objective metrics in combination with any additional information on financial need in response to question #1 in the written application.
• Grade Report on MAUI
• Information available on MAUI related to identification with marginalized or underrepresented groups, such as, but not limited to, ethnicity/race, citizenship and first-generation status.
• Other information on MAUI to confirm scholarship eligibility, such as, but not limited to, enrollment status, program of study and academic standing.
• Academic and extracurricular achievement as represented in response to question #2 in the written application.

During the 2022-23 academic year, the Sport and Recreation Management program will offer several scholarships to support SRM students during experiential learning. These scholarships, known as John E. Evans Experiential Learning Awards, will be distributed during the spring and summer to individual students in SRM field experience courses (both guided and independent field experience), individual students participating in an SRM field trip, and some funds will be applied directly to field trip fees and to guided field experience courses with course fees to help make those experiences more accessible to all students.

John Evans The John E. Evans Experiential Learning Award was established in 2019 by John Evans Jr., Julie Evans, and Jane Evans through the Evans Family Foundation. This fund is named in memory of John E. Evans (49BSC) and is awarded to support students participating in experiential learning opportunities offered by the University of Iowa Sport and Recreation Management Program.

Criteria

1. Financial need
2. Academic and extracurricular achievement
3. Potential for the experiential opportunity to support the applicant’s academic and career goals

Additionally, applicants must be in good academic standing and registered full-time students (less than full-time enrollment accepted if in the final semester before graduation or if a graduate student). Highest preference will be given to students majoring in SRM. Secondary preference will be given to students pursuing a minor in SRM. All students, regardless of major, are invited to apply. Undergraduate and graduate students will be given equal consideration.

Students may apply for more than one Evans Experiential Learning Award and will be eligible for awards in more than one experience (such as two summer guided field experiences), but students must submit an application for each experience. In other words, if applying for three scholarships the applicant must submit three applications, each written specifically for one experience. All scholarships are non-renewable.

Evans Experiential Learning Awards of varying amounts will be made to students in the following experiences with the following Evans Award application deadlines:

SRM Spring 2023 Field Trip (destination and dates TBD)

• Scholarship application deadline to be announced.
• Receipt of a scholarship will also include a guaranteed spot on the trip (no waiting in the registration line)
• To apply: Wait for the field trip destination and dates to be announced and then email a written statement to srm-info@uiowa.edu that answers the following questions:
  1. Please explain how this trip will support your educational and professional development
  2. Please explain your financial need for this scholarship.
• The SRM program will check financial need of all applicants in the Office of Financial Aid before awards are made. Awards will be made based on a combination of financial need (from the Office of Financial Aid and the written application), academic achievement (based on academic record), major/minor (Sport and Recreation Management must be either one of your majors or a minor), and ability of the trip to support your educational and professional development (as explained in your written application).

Submit a written statement (maximum length of two pages) to srm-info@uiowa.edu telling the committee why you are applying for the scholarship and addressing the three main criteria outlined above:

1. Describe your financial need for the scholarship–the written statement provides an opportunity to contextualize your financial need and add details beyond the objective metrics on file at the Office of Financial Aid.
2. Academic and extracurricular achievements–outline and describe any academic and/or extracurricular achievements or efforts (internships, student organization involvement, volunteer work, etc.) that you would like the committee to consider
3. Potential for the experiential opportunity to support your academic and career goals–how will the experience that this scholarship supports help you advance academically and/or in your professional development?

The committee will review objective criteria (Office of Financial Aid metrics, program of study and GPA), but the written statement is an opportunity for the applicant to provide the committee more detail concerning the financial need for the scholarship and how the scholarship might support the applicant’s academic and career goals (subjective criteria). Statements must be submitted to srm-info@uiowa.edu by the deadlines listed above under each scholarship for priority consideration. – late applications will be considered where noted, but only if funds still remain after early applications have been considered.

To support and encourage student leaders and innovators in UI Sport and Recreation Management (SRM), the program invites current UI SRM undergraduate and master’s students to apply for SRM Leadership and Innovation Scholarships. Total funding of $8,000, which will be broken up over multiple individual scholarship awards, is available. The application review committee will allocate funds based on the applicant’s demonstration in their application materials of leadership and innovation (in the SRM program, elsewhere on campus, in extracurricular activities, in their community, and/or other examples).  

Applicants are eligible for one SRM Leadership and Innovation Scholarship, but receipt of an SRM Leadership and Innovation Scholarship does not disqualify an applicant from applying for other types of SRM scholarships. Recipients may re-apply in future years for SRM Leadership and Innovation Scholarships.

Criteria

A committee of SRM faculty and staff will review all applications and will make award decisions based on a combination of the following criteria.

The applicant:

1. Must demonstrate leadership and/or innovation on- or off-campus, in their home communities, in their workplaces, or elsewhere.  Leadership and/or innovation related to sport and recreation is preferred, but leadership and/or innovation may be demonstrated in other ways.
2. Must be a declared Sport and Recreation Management program undergraduate (BS) or master’s (MA) student. Double-major students are eligible, but one major must be SRM.
3. Must be a registered full-time student. The application review committee will consider less than full-time enrollment applicants if the applicant is in their final semester before graduation or if the applicant is a graduate student.

The application review committee may use additional information on MAUI to confirm scholarship eligibility, such as, but not limited to grade report, enrollment status, program of study, and academic standing.

1. Describe your greatest examples of leadership and/or innovation on- or off-campus and, if applicable, how they relate to sport or recreation. 
2. Would this scholarship support your continued leadership and innovation efforts?  If so, please explain. 
3. List and provide details on other academic and extracurricular achievements (on- and/or off-campus) during your time as an SRM student. These should be in addition to your examples of leadership and innovation in response to the first question. (Examples could include being named to dean’s list, scholarship awards, internships, volunteer experiences, practicums, jobs, community service, student organizations, athletics and more.)

To support the attainment of the Sport and Recreation Management (SRM) MA degree by students with the greatest financial need and increase the representation of students from underrepresented and marginalized groups in the sport and recreation industry, the program invites incoming graduate students for the summer or fall 2023 semester to apply for an SRM Program Incoming Graduate Student Scholarship (SRMIGSS). Total funding of $5,000, which will be broken up over multiple individual scholarship awards, is available. The application review committee will allocate funds based on the applicant’s financial need and/or identification with an underrepresented or marginalized group.  

Applicants are eligible for one SRMIGSS, but receipt of an SRMIGSS does not disqualify an applicant from applying for other types of SRM scholarships.

Criteria

A committee of SRM faculty and staff will review all applications and will make award decisions based on the following criteria.

1. Must be admitted to the Sport and Recreation Management MA program, accept your admission and enroll in the program.
2. Must be entering your first semester of the MA program in the summer or fall of 2023 
3. Must be able to show either financial need or identification with an underrepresented or marginalized group, or both.

• Financial need among applicants will be ranked based on Office of Student Financial Aid objective metrics, and additional information about financial need supplied in the application will be considered.
• Identification with an underrepresented or marginalized group is defined broadly to include a wide range of groups.
