Guided field experience practicums are a vital ingredient in UISRM’s experiential learning formula. At this point in 2022, UISRM students have successfully completed six guided field experiences with 93 students earning course credit toward their degree. Listed below are each of the six practicums, names of all students who successfully completed each practicum, and highlights from the experience. Be sure to check out the University of Iowa feature article detailing the Team USA practicum experience as well as the practicum highlight videos that illustrate the student experiences in Colorado Springs and Chicago.

During the summer 2022 term, fourteen students experienced an Olympic Movement-focused learning opportunity – the Team USA practicum. During this incredible experience, students were able to learn and engage with the Olympic Movement from the local to the international level all while “living like an Olympian” on the United States Olympic and Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO. The learning and networking sessions included numerous Olympic Movement speakers and the research projects were presented directly to USOPC staff. Additionally, students were able to visit the United States Olympic and Paralympic Museum, tour the USOPC Downtown Headquarters, try out a few Olympic sports, attend a Rocky Mountain Vibes game, and experience various Colorado Springs attractions.

Review Chicago presentation highlights
During the practicum, which was in its ninth year, students researched, developed, and presented sport marketing recommendations to the Cedar Rapids Kernels before transitioning to work on a variety of sport management projects for the Chicago Blackhawks in such areas as marketing, social media, stadium design, player recognition, communications, community relations and more.
Students traveled to Chicago and Cedar Rapids for meetings with executives and stadium tours (including a private skating session at the Blackhawks practice facility!). Throughout the course, the Blackhawks organization held professional development panels for students with executives from all areas of team operations on such topics as women in sports, marketing, analytics, social media, communications, ticket sales and more.
Students have already seen the Blackhawks implement some of their research and recommendations. Well done, students! The partnership with the Blackhawks has been so successful during its nine years that Adam Kempenaar, most recently Blackhawks vice president of marketing and content, was inspired to develop and teach a new UISRM class this year in Iowa City on podcasting for sport and recreation professionals. Thank you for your commitment to helping develop UISRM students, Adam.

Agency Associates helped the event load in and served as scorekeepers throughout the event. After the operational work was complete, a team of Associates provided suggestions to ICASC on how to increase the frequency and efficiency of the Gran Gable bike race. Other Associates consulted with Gravel Adventure Field Guide to evaluate feasibility of a project in the Corridor and with the Iowa City Bike Library to continue preparation for the Farm Cycle Ride.
