John Muir is hailed by many as “Father of the National Parks.” He is one of a handful of individuals who helped create and shape the United States’ National Park Service, also known as “America’s Best Idea.”
Sarah Hardin, UISRM Assistant Professor of Instruction, created the course Recreation and Parks in the United States: Foundations and Impact to assist students in the exploration of "America's Best Idea" as a reflection of democratic ideals that continue to shape and influence a society that aspires to Muir's philosophy. While Muir was known for his influence on American life in a variety of ways, there is one quote that embodies Sarah's teaching approach and philosophy of the power of recreation in individual lives:
“The power of imagination makes us infinite.” ― John Muir
Sarah’s professional experience focused on leadership, facilities, and programming in collegiate, community, and non-profit recreational settings. Her academic and teaching background made her the perfect addition to the UISRM faculty to construct the program’s Recreation Management concentration. Upon joining the UISRM faculty in 2022, Sarah focused on delivering courses and mentorship introducing students to the value of participation-focused sport and recreation that facilitates individual imagination and the endless career possibilities available in the recreation management field.
Taylor Kruse (BS 2024) is one student taught and mentored by Sarah and whose imagination was sparked by working in collegiate recreation as an undergraduate student. The two collaborated on a presentation titled “Mindset Adjustment: Empower Yourself and Your Staff” which explored the impact of 'mindset' on staff learning, development and success. The two presented at RECShare, the state conference for professionals in collegiate recreation. On the experience and mentorship provided by Sarah, Taylor has this to say:
Sarah’s support always extended far beyond the classroom. Not only did she foster an engaging learning environment, but she also opened opportunities for professional growth. When she invited me to present at RECShare, she provided me with a great opportunity to gain confidence and skills speaking to a professional audience and networking with professionals in the field. ― Taylor Kruse
With her degree earned, Taylor made the choice to begin her career working as Volunteer Coordinator for Houses Into Homes. The non-profit collects and distributes gently used household items and furniture to benefit individuals and families in Johnson County who are exiting difficult circumstances. Taylor’s efforts will help lead to infinite possibilities for many individuals and families in the Iowa City area.
Alex Tuttle (ex. BS 2025) is another student who, through Sarah’s guidance, is allowing his imagination to lead him to exciting opportunities in interesting locations. He began working with UI Recreational Services in 2022 as an intramural official. His effectiveness and initiative allowed him to officiate at regional tournaments at the University of Missouri-Columbia and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Being a student in several of Sarah’s courses has allowed Alex to learn more about career opportunities in collegiate recreation. In combination with Sarah’s mentorship, Alex was able to take advantage of UI Recreational Service’s willingness to support Alex’s participation in NIRSA events in Phoenix, AZ and Fort Collins, CO. NIRSA is the national association for collegiate recreation. On Sarah’s influence on his career aspirations and success, Alex has this to say:
Sarah has been one of my go-to mentors as I look to begin a career in campus recreation. She was the first to tell me about an internship with Recreational Services, which deepened my passion for the field and opened up many professional development opportunities. I have asked her many questions about getting into the field, and she has always answered every single one. I would not be in the position I am now without Sarah's mentorship. ― Alex Tuttle
Taylor and Alex are two examples of the infinite possibilities of student success through UISRM, Recreation Management coursework, and Sarah’s mentorship. Thank you to Sarah for sparking students’ imaginations and exploring all that is possible while a UISRM student and beyond.
