Kara Kehe
Kara Kehe (MA 1999)

Once upon a time, I was an undergraduate student studying accounting and finance at a small, private college, and an internship with an area business was recommended to me as a complementary approach to learning that would build upon relevant on-campus work and co-curricular activities.  That non-credit summer experience caused me to reflect carefully on the next steps in my career, and months later I decided to pursue postgraduate studies focused on athletic administration at the University of Iowa.

The Field House became my academic home for a two-year stretch during which I served as a teaching assistant in what was then Sport, Health, Leisure, and Physical Studies.  Outside of the classroom, I had the good fortune to be mentored by Dr. Christine Grant, participate in a variety of administrative projects in intercollegiate athletics, and coach a local high school sports team.  Each experience that tied to my master’s degree became a brick in the foundation of my professional career, and my gratitude for the past provides motivation in my current role as a Sport and Recreation Management (UISRM) instructor at Iowa.  I want to pay it forward.

As my work has come full circle with a return to Iowa City, I now enjoy engaging with another wave of students seeking the knowledge and skills that will anchor their journeys.  UISRM is recognized for both the distinct cultivation of hands-on learning in the field and the intentional fostering of a network of connections that aid in growth and development.  One example of how UISRM helps individuals excel is this year’s initiative to sponsor more than two dozen student memberships with the Women Leaders in Sports organization.  I am thankful for the financial contributions to UISRM that made this commitment possible so aspiring professionals are afforded with educational programming and mentoring guidance that will assist them in succeeding as they navigate unique circumstances that arise in the industry.

Collectively, the relationships with the students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends of UISRM are a blessing to me, and the dedication of this group to our program continues to be inspiring.  Today, as much as ever, I am encouraged by the moments when students first discover and then realize their dreams.  It is a privilege for me to collaborate with very talented colleagues.  I am heartened by the many forms of support we receive from individuals who believe in UISRM.  Together, we have established an environment in which students can thrive as they explore opportunities in sport and recreation, and we can look to a future that is bright because of our dynamic community of Hawkeyes!

It is easy to give to UISRM. Any amount is greatly appreciated and will go directly to supporting the unique, experience-based education that UISRM provides its students.
