Special Olympics Iowa Winter Games Practicum

Congratulations to each of the students who successfully completed the Special Olympics Iowa Winter Games practicum!

  • UISRM Students: Olivia Amos, Andrew Avolio, Braxton Beal, Charlie Bischoff, Justin Britt, Casey Day, Madison Hatfield, Drew Hotz, Tyson James, Avery Johnson, Hunter Knapp, Logan Kruse, Karenna Larson, Charlie MacKimm, Kevin Marshall, Dylan Odette, Jackson Palmersheim, Christian Paloma, Cody Parrish, Will Raider, Liam Reardon, Jonnathan Rodriguez, Noah Segal, Alec Shifflet, Jared Simpson, Sam Sutter, Nathaniel Waikel, and Jongkwan Yun.
  • Therapeutic Recreation and Disability Studies Certificate Students: Tessa Bartell, Raylin Capdevila, Paige Carter, Taylor Courtier, Paige Froelich, Haley Gajewski, Sophia Hammes, Sarah Martin, Mary Miller,  Macy Muller, Bailey Rhoads, Emma Sueppel, Katie Trias, and Tayler Wolfs.

During the winter 2022-23 term, 42 students from three programs in the Health & Human Physiology Department (Sport and Recreation Management, Therapeutic Recreation, and the Disability Studies Certificate) took an experiential class that worked with the Special Olympics of Iowa Winter Games. Students packed a semester of course content, academic research studies, zoom sessions, and exams into three weeks before heading to Dubuque where they assisted with event management and operations tasks related to Alpine and Cross-Country skiing and Snowshoe competitions while also providing support to athletes. The experience culminated with presentations to the Special Olympics Iowa staff with recommendations for future events. One highlight included several Iowa student athletes engaging with Special Olympic athletes from across the state. Seeing students engage, learn, and grow in such meaningful ways, and then immediately put that new knowledge into action, makes taking a class during winter break truly worthwhile.

Just to name a few! All Fans First ambassadors put in a lot of hard work which led to one student landing an internship with the Hawkeye Event Management department. It was a great semester!

This is a picture of UISRM Agency Practicum

Congratulations to each of the Agency Associates who successfully completed the UISRM Agency practicum!

During the Agency, associates had a variety of learning opportunities to deepen their knowledge of sport marketing agencies and gain hands-on experience at a variety of events. Throughout the Agency, associates learned from Iowa Heartlanders executives and had the opportunity to make sales calls on their behalf. Also, associates led sponsor activations prior to Hawkeye Football games, worked aid stations for Farm Cycle, and led an on-campus tour for Kids on Course. In addition, the UIRSM Agency gave game day logistical support to the Heartlanders and ICCSD on their very successful first school day game, helping nearly 1,600 students and staff enjoy the day at Xtream Arena. Finally, associates supported the Iowa City Area Sports Commission during a busy stretch of wrestling events, most notably the Dan Gable Donnybrook.
