During the practicum, students performed market research and developed and presented creative promotional campaigns designed to increase Gen Z viewership of the 2022 Daytona 500 broadcast on FOX Sports and increase tune-in time by Gen Z viewers. The students received high praise for their work from Matt Nordby, NASCAR Managing Director of Communications, and Erik Arneson, FOX Sports Vice President of Media Relations, for presenting several “outside the box” ideas, such as NFT drops, NIL partnerships with student-athletes, and a Lego collaboration that Matt Nordby said was, “Something tangible that we could truly capitalize on through so many avenues.” Well done, students!

During the Winter 2021-22 term, 57 students from three programs in the Health & Human Physiology Department (Sport and Recreation Management, Therapeutic Recreation, and the Disability Studies Certificate) took an experiential class that worked with the Special Olympics of Iowa Winter Games. Students packed a semester of course content, academic research studies, zoom sessions, and exams into three weeks before heading to Dubuque where they assisted with event management and operations tasks related to Alpine and Cross-Country skiing and Snowshoe competitions while also providing support to athletes. The experience culminated with presentations to the Special Olympics of Iowa staff with recommendations for future events. This was our coldest practicum by far, but seeing students learn and grow in such meaningful ways, and then immediately put that new knowledge into action, was truly heartwarming!
