2021 One Day for Iowa Graphic

The UI Sport and Recreation Management program has a history of success in the UI Center for Advancement’s #1DayForIowa fundraising initiative. In 2018, UISRM finished in 7th place overall with a total of 47 gifts. In 2019, we finished in 5th place overall with 86 gifts, ahead of Tippie College of Business and Hawkeye Athletics! Our goals for this year’s the big day, March 24, include finishing on the podium (1st, 2nd or 3rd place) and collecting at least 125 gifts. Achieving these goals will support UISRM’s expansion of scholarship awards to students during the 2021-22 academic year.

#1DayForIowa is all about participation. Gifts can start as low as $10 and be made at this link: give to UISRM on One Day for Iowa (click here). Also, it’s the total number of gifts, not the dollar amount, that helps the program climb the leaderboard. So, if you plan to give $30 and can break it up into three gifts of $10 each, doing so in comparison to a single $30 gift helps UISRM climb even further up the leaderboard.

There are several friendly competitions and challenges throughout #1DayForIowa, with the most significant being the Leaderboard Challenge. The top-10 programs in total number of gifts will divide $40,000 in additional financial support. There are also many ways to participate and support UISRM during #1DayForIowa that do not require a donation. Such competitions and challenges include:

  • Recent Grad and Student Challenge: All gifts made by recent UI graduates (2011 to 2020) and current students between now and March 24 will be matched up to $20,000. (Once $20,000 in matching funds are gone, the matching ends, so be sure to give early if you fit these categories and want to double your gift!)
  • Photo Challenge: Before March 24, use your personal Instagram or Twitter account to post public photos with a UI theme for a chance to win $500 for the UISRM program! Your post must use #1DayForIowa, tag the SRM program (@uiowasportrecmgmt on Instagram and @UISportRecMgmt on Twitter) and give the UISRM program a shout-out in your post. Post early and often – these are selected before March 24. The post could be anything: throwback photos of you and your roommate, your future Hawkeye at their first game, your pet decked out in black-and-gold, or any other favorite Hawkeye photos. (UISRM has won a photo challenge every year we’ve competed in #1DayForIowa – help us keep the streak alive!)
  • Instagram Story Challenge: Look for the University of Iowa Instagram Story that has a call out for your best Hawkeye photos. Simply direct message (DM) your photo to the university’s Instagram account, mention the @uiowasportrecmgmt program in your DM, and you’ll have a chance to appear on Iowa’s Instagram Story during #1DayForIowa. Six photo submissions will be randomly selected and each will win $500 for their chosen area.
  • Facebook and Twitter Challenges: Reference the graphic below for several Facebook and Twitter challenges.

If being part of a winning UISRM team on March 24 isn’t enough, we have some extra incentives for participating:

  • Mug Giveaway: Make at least 5 unique donations at the giving link above (at least $10 per gift) between now and 11:59 p.m. March 24 and receive a special UISRM mug that includes the program logo and tagline (pictured right)!
  • Student Raffles: Any current UI student who donates to the UISRM program at the giving link between now and March 24 and any current UI student who enters the photo challenge before March 24th will be entered into a raffle with a chance to win the following:
  1. $200 gift certificate to the Iowa Hawk Shop in the Iowa Memorial Union.
  2. FREE registration to the next UISRM field trip led by Professor Matheson.
  3. Entry to an exclusive networking event (only five students admitted!) with UISRM Advisory Board members and special sport and recreation industry executive guests.
  4. Unlock a UISRM Tailgate Challenge. If the SRM program reaches its goal of at least 125 total donations, the program will host a UISRM tailgate event before an Iowa Football game.

The generosity of our supporters during #1DayForIowa and Giving Tuesday in recent years has helped UISRM establish new scholarship awards for students (see the Joining the Journey to Unity story to read more about the new Diversity Scholarships). Also, the program has plans to create additional scholarships next academic year with the help of our supportive community. Please join us between now and 11:59pm on March 24 by donating, participating on social media, and following the #1DayForIowa Leaderboard (click here) where the UISRM program is featured among more than 80 other programs.

It is easy to give to the UISRM program during #1DayForIowa. Any amount is greatly appreciated and will help UISRM climb the leaderboard and unlock additional funding that will go directly to supporting scholarship awards and programming for our students.
